Life is an illusion...
Vaurien De Bernace (1715 - 1764)
Though his name has long been forgotten, Vaurien De Bernace was a man worth remembering.
Born September 1st, 1715 (the same day King Louis XIV of France died) Vaurien De Bernace was born into a wealthy family in Paris. His mother died during his birth and his father died seventeen years later at the Battle of San Pietro.
At the tender age of seventeen, Vaurien inherited his entire family estate. What followed was a life of little less than debauchery. It was only at the age of twenty-seven when he almost died from a chest infection (some say brought on by his use of opium) that he began to change his ways. Initially contemplating a life in the church, Vaurien became interested in philosophy and alchemy. It was during this time he may have first learned of the Reality Stone. The Reality Stone, which some say was simply another name for the Philosopher's Stone, was said to give the person who looked through it a true perception of the nature of reality; the suggestion being that what we see in our day to day lives is purely an illusion of how we want the world to be, not how it truly is.
Very little is known of what followed, but it is said over the next twenty years he squandered his entire fortune searching the known world for this stone. His story ends on an intriguing note. He was found dead at the age of forty-nine in Venice, whether by his own hand or another's is unclear. But legend has it that it was on this day he did indeed find the Reality Stone and looked through it for the very first and last time.
